War Dog Memorials 7: Hartsdale, New York

To honor Independence Day, this week we are visiting one of the oldest military working dog memorials in the United States: the War Dog Memorial in Hartsdale Pet Cemetary in Westchester County, New York.

It is clear that the desire to honor our canine soldiers is not a late 20th century affectation.  Erected in 1923 to honor the services of dogs in the First World War, the monument bears a simple dedication which reads:

DEDICATED
TO THE MEMORY OF
THE WAR DOG
ERECTED BY PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION
BY DOG LOVERS.  TO MAN’S MOST
FAITHFUL FRIEND FOR THE VALIANT
SERVICES RENDERED IN THE
WORLD WAR
1914 - 1918.

The memorial was refurbished and rededicated in 2005.  More history of the memorial can be found at the Hartsdale Pet Cemetary website.
